TO/DIE/FOR: Wounds Wide Open

Mucho
se ha hablado y escrito acerca de los finlandeses TO/ DIE/ FOR.
Polémicas, idas y venidas, altibajos… de todo hemos visto en el seno de
este quinteto gótico. Pero todo eso parece pertenecer al pasado y a día
de hoy, podemos decir que TO/ DIE /FOR reaparecen de nuevo en escena,
con un más que aceptable nuevo disco que recoge el testigo de aquellos
trabajos que le dieron el éxito en el pasado.

 

Atrás
quedan los tiempos en los que unos desconocidos chicos de Kuovala – una
de las ciudades más prolíficas de Finlandia, musicalmente hablando –
formaran MARY-ANN allá por el año 1993.De su hard rock inicial pasaron
a un rock gótico con tintes melancólicos, en un proyecto rebautizado
como TO/ DIE/ FOR. A partir de ahí, la historia es conocida. Tras un
primer EP autoeditado firman un contrato con Spinefarm y pasan a
engrosar el grupo de bandas que lideraron el movimiento gótico
finlandés en los últimos noventa. Tras girar junto a DARK TRAQNUILLITY,
SENTENCED e IN FLAMES y presentar su aclamado “All Eternity” la banda
edita  “Epilogue”, disco que tendrá una gira de soporte en la que TO/
DIE / FOR se embarca junto a LACRIMOSA.

 

Hagamos un
retroceso en el tiempo y pongámonos en este hipotético punto de
partida. Si en lugar de haber editado “Jaded” en 2003, TO/ DIE/ FOR
hubiese lanzado este “Wounds Wide Open” nadie se hubiese extrañado. Y
es que este quinto trabajo de la formación tiene una  vena que hace
recordar a aquella época dorada de los finlandeses. Ese sonido
embelesador, con la voz de Jarno en plena forma fueron las claves del
éxito por aquel entonces; y podemos decir que puede serlo ahora
también. Si muchos de los fans que renegaron de TO/ DIE / FOR tras la
edición de “Jaded” – en menor medida- y “IV” escuchan el material
renovado de la banda, quizá quede un resquicio de esperanza para que se
vuelva producir el mismo idilio que tuvo lugar siete años atrás. Hechos
como el de la continua salida de miembros de la formación, la amenaza
de disolución o la pantomima de TIAGA y la posterior lucha y
adquisición del nombre de “TO/ DIE/ FOR” no hay ayudado para nada a una
banda que, junto a otras como CHARON, ENTWINE o THE 69 EYES en su
versión gótica,  encabezan la hornada de grupos góticos destacados que
han influenciado a toda una generación.

 

“Wounds Wide
Open” retoma el hilo compositivo que ya emplearan en canciones como
“Farewell”, “Live in you”, “Hollow heart” o “Immortal Love”
pertenecientes a obras que ensalzaron a la banda en el panorama europeo
y asiático, principalmente.

 

En esta tónica ascendente
que previamente comentábamos, hay que tener en cuenta la actitud del
grupo sobre los escenarios. Tras unos años de lamentables espectáculos
y de un Jarno totalmente devastado por el alcohol, que se arrastraba
por los escenarios en muy baja forma (a la última gira de salas me
remito), pasamos a ver una cara muy diferente del músico en la pasada
edición del festival granadino Atarfe Vega Rock, en la que la banda
completó una muy buena actuación, pese a la temprana hora asignada.
Muchos son los que dicen que fue ese el motivo por el que los
finlandeses tocaron sobrios y concentrados, ya que luego se les pudo
ver de nuevo haciendo de las suyas. Fuese como fuese, se vio a una
banda más compacta, más metida en su papel y entregada a la causa; y
precisamente ese el modelo que todos deseamos ver en los próximos años
y que garantizaría una estabilidad más que necesaria para mantener a la
formación viva y con buena salud.

 

En cuanto a las
canciones contenidas en este nuevo disco, no encontramos grandes
sorpresas. Once canciones contenidas en  algo más de cuarenta minutos.
Esto es, once temas melódicos con ese aire característico marca de la
casa TO/ DIE/ FOR que llenan de melancolía y tristeza las canciones.

 

Con
“Wiced circle” vemos la comentada recuperación. Con una estructura muy
parecida a la ya empleada en el pasado, el tema contiene todos los
ingredientes para ser un éxito. Los múltiples arreglos del agrado de la
banda quedan patentes en “Like Never Before”, con delicadas partes de
cuerda. En “Scar Diary” vemos coros muy en la onda de los antiguos
WITHIN TEMPTATION. El sentimiento de hastío y de imparable caída parece
inundar a “New Heaven” y como no podía ser de otra manera, la
emotividad fluye a raudales en “The quiet room”.

 

Como
viene siendo habitual, TO/ DIE/ FOR siempre guardan una sorpresa en
forma de versión para el tramo final de cada disco. Esta vez el tema
elegido es “(I Just) Want You”, adaptado para la causa y obra original
del señor OZZY OSBOURNE. La balada queda sublime y a buen seguro que
gustará a propios y extraños de la materia.

 

En
definitiva, TO/ DIE/ FOR presentan un lavado de cara que no ha hecho
más que reafirmar lo que pudimos conocer en su día. Con esta mirada al
pasado se hace válida la teoría que reza que “tiempos pasados siempre
fueron mejores”. En el caso de TO/ DIE/ FOR esto se cumple y ahora
parece que los finlandeses quieren retomar esa senda del éxito.
Esperemos que próximas entregas además del buen sonido conseguido,
puedan innovar en algún aspecto.

Fjoergyn.-Sade Et Masoch

Fjoergyn is a German folk metal band formed in 2003. Currently it
consists of three members. The name “Fjoergyn” comes from Icelandic
mythology and means “Nature”.

On March 29, 2005 they released
their debut album Ernte Im Herbst on the record label Black Attakk. It
is a concept album about nature’s revenge against mankind. They used a
drum machine since they had no drummer at the time of the recording.

Their
second album, Sade Et Masoch, has been completed and was released in
Spring 2007. This album also saw the addition of a new member, who
according to their website contributed to a large extent.
